Texts, email and your number

One page for everything we send you

Everything about how we reach you is on one page: Notifications, under You. It has two parts, Texts and Email. Each shows where messages go and what we send. You change the number and the email themselves on your profile.

Signing in with your phone

Every Gatherly account has a mobile number, and it's how you sign in. Type your number and we text you a 6-digit code. Type the code in and you're in. If you're new, we then ask your name, and an email if you'd like to add one. Email is optional.

For now we can only text US and Canadian numbers. Codes expire after 10 minutes. To stop codes being misused, each number can get 5 codes a day, each account can ask for 5 a day, and you have 5 tries an hour at typing a code. If your account also has an email, you can sign in with that instead.

A number belongs to one account

Each number can be on only one Gatherly account, and every account has one. That's how we know which account is yours when you sign in with a code.

Who can tell you're on Gatherly

A host who already has your number, saved in their own Gatherly contacts or added to one of their invite lists, sees an On Gatherly badge next to it when they're inviting people. That's the whole of what they learn: not your name, your photo, your email or which events you've been to. Someone who doesn't already have your number can't look you up by it, and we never show your number to anyone. Because your number is how you sign in, there's no way to switch this off.

Changing your number

Go to your profile and tap Change number. Type the new number, tap Text me a code, then type the code and tap Verify new number. Your old number keeps working until the new one is verified, so you won't be locked out or miss texts in between. After that, you sign in with the new number and texts go there. Changed your mind before verifying? Tap Back to profile and nothing changes.

If your number is on another account

Phone numbers get passed on to new owners, and families share phones, so a number may already be on someone else's Gatherly account. We only tell you after you've typed the right code, so only the person holding the phone can find out or do anything about it. Then you can:

Move it to this account. The number moves to you. The other account loses it and has to add a new number the next time it signs in, and we email that account to say it moved.
Use a different number. Nothing changes on either account.
Sign out and use that account instead, if the other account is yours.

If your number was moved off your account

We email you when it happens. The next time you sign in, we ask you to add a new number. If your account has an email, you can sign in with it to get there. If you didn't expect the move, email hello@gatherly.events.

Texts we send

Notify me when guests grab tickets. With this on, we text you each time someone buys a ticket to an event you host or co-host. Free RSVPs don't send a text. It's the one text you can switch off on the Notifications page.

Event reminders and host updates are always on: day-of reminders, and messages from the hosts of events you're going to. Reply STOP to any Gatherly text to stop them.

Adding an email

On your profile or the Notifications page, tap Add email, type the address and tap Send confirmation link. We email a link to that address. Tap it to confirm the address is yours. Until you do, the address shows Not confirmed and we don't send anything else there. If the link doesn't arrive, tap Resend link, or Use a different email to start again.

You need a confirmed email to publish an event with paid tickets or to set up payouts, because that's where payout, dispute and sales notices go, and Stripe needs one to pay you. Free tickets and RSVPs don't need one. If you're creating a paid event without one, tap Save draft & add email: we save the event as a draft and bring you back to it once you confirm. It can't be published until then.

Changing your email

On your profile, tap Change email and send a link to the new address. To keep your account safe, we also send a link to your current address, and the change only finishes once you've tapped the links in both emails. Until then, emails keep going to your current address. Once it's done, you sign in with the new address instead of the old one. Adding an email to an account that doesn't have one only needs the one link.

Emails we always send

Once your email is confirmed, we always send: your tickets, receipts and refunds; changes to events you're going to, like new times or a cancellation; and, if you host, payouts, disputes and paused sales. These can't be switched off for now. More choices about which emails you get are coming soon. Without an email, your tickets are still on your account under Tickets. A note there says so. Tap × to hide it for good; you can still add an email from your profile or the Notifications page.
